It’s coming and the self-help community will be all over it.

What am I talking about? New Years of course!

Concepts for resolutions will be flowing. There will be talk about not setting them, talk about being in the moment, talk about health and happiness needing to prevail over all else, well of course it does!

That’s right, if you don’t want 2023 to begin with the same flavour and story as 2022 finished and that’s a typical result of you constantly losing your focus, then this is for you!

Don’t change your focus. You need to master it!

Master your focus on 2023 starting out as the best year yet.

Master your focus in order for you to get what you NEED, not what you want.

B is for Behaviour(s)

No focus may look like this

  • “I never stick with it long enough to be really good because I change my focus.”

  • “I stick with something for a week or two, then give up, never mastering my focus.”

  • “My phone just seems to distract me, I lose focus.”

  • “There is always something that seems to come up in my life that changes my focus.”

  • “I didn’t master my focus at the start of last year and just lost touch of my goals.”

What does mastering your focus mean?

To master your focus, you need to be able to focus beyond just the occasions that suit you. It is your ability to lock your mind in with frequency, often during the times when you would rather be doing something else.

It's the ability to say and understand that this is the priority right now that requires your utmost attention, “this is what I am here to do”.

Do you know why most people don’t achieve what they want?

They simply lose focus, their attention goes onto something else that is usually easier to engage with or that they have done multiple times before.

Look across the globe right now and the people sitting at the top of their fields, 99% of them have mastered their focus on their niche and that's what makes them incredible.

You need to do the same thing when it comes to your life.

You need to master your focus on your priorities. You may well need to also define those priorities to begin with.

That step is important because starting 2023 without defined priorities and a plan to master your focus on, well… it’s a waste of your valuable time and quite frankly, that’s BS!

S is for Strategies

Strategy to master your focus

This strategy is really broken into 2 sections. That of defining your priorities and that of mastering your focus.

  1. Prioritise your needs over your wants

It’s amazing how many people are not clear on the difference between what they really need in order to pursue their potential and be the best version of themselves versus a simple want that doesn’t necessarily make maximum impact, which might be nice but it’s far from essential.

It blows me away how often I talk to people who put off taking action because they can’t have what they want, sacrificing their actual needs!

Here are a few examples:

  • I need to get started with exercise because I am badly out of shape, but
I want a F45 membership or I won’t do it because that looks cool.

  • I need to have a healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables, but
I want to drink alcohol 5 nights a week.

  • I need to get up early for my morning routine, but
I want to stay up until midnight watching Netflix.

  • I need to hire a coach to support my growth, but
I want certainty that I will achieve the results that I long for.

Does any of that ring a bell? If it does, follow the steps:

  • Write a sentence for what a successful 2023 would look like.

Then

  • What are the 2 most impactful achievements you can make to begin 2023?

  • What are the 2 most fulfilling achievements?

  • What are the 2 funnest achievements?

Now, number these 1 to 6 in or of importance, 1 being the thing that takes precedence over everything else… 6 being the least important on the list.

You now have a statement to give you the direction you should head to, aiming for this true north star in 2023 means to you, along with 6 priorities.

2. Give yourself the space to master your focus

You now have your statement and priorities to achieve in 2023. Next comes the mastering of focus.

What actually matters most here is your ability to keep doing the things that you set out to do, frequency and longevity are crucial to creating long lasting and effective change on these 6 important priorities you defined above.

If you are unable to master your focus, try this:

  • Create a deadline to achieve each. They can’t all be achieved at the same time.

  • Break down the steps required to get there for each, including new skills required and help required from other people.

  • Phone a friend and ask them to be an accountability partner to ensure you are on track.

  • Create time and space to focus.

  • Identify possible distractions and remove the oxygen for them to gain traction.

  • Define your ‘why’ these priorities matter.

Remove the element of complexity, the more complex the more likely you will lose focus on the task at hand. If you do need intense focus and concentration, make sure you rest afterwards.

It’s better to be good with a consistent and focused rhythm than waiting to try and be perfect.

I will leave you with this thought. We have covered much about what to create and introduce into your life which is important no doubt but think about this…

What is the 1 thing that no longer serves me that I must let go of or simply stop doing?

It’s time…

Time to define your priorities.
Time to master your focus.
Time to take the reins and get a coach to start 2023 off on the right foot.

Someone else said about this

“Concentration can be cultivated. One can learn to exercise willpower, discipline one’s body and train one’s mind.”
Anil Ambani
