I have the privilege of working with diverse leadership teams across various industries. The pandemic slowed down leadership development, but now there's a renewed focus on understanding how critical effective leadership is to organisational success. However, with so many leadership qualities out there—like decisiveness, empathy, and integrity—it’s easy to get overwhelmed.

That’s why I recommend honing in on three principles that feel authentic to you right now. Consistency, for instance, is crucial; it ensures your team knows what to expect from you, creating a stable and predictable work environment. Courage is another essential quality—it's not just about taking risks but also about leading your team through challenging times with confidence.

Collaboration fosters growth by bringing diverse perspectives together. When leaders encourage collaboration, they create a space where innovative ideas can flourish. Meanwhile, challenging your team pushes them to exceed expectations and achieve more than they thought possible.

Caring, on the other hand, is about genuinely investing in your team’s well-being. If you don’t care, don’t expect your team to. Finally, being calculating means having a clear, strategic approach to each decision, ensuring your actions align with long-term goals.

Why choose just three? Because focusing on a few key principles allows you to integrate them fully into your leadership style, making them your north star as you guide your team through both calm and choppy waters. Start by asking yourself: What does my organisation need from me right now? What does my team need over the next six months?

Leadership is about evolving and adapting to meet the challenges ahead. By selecting three principles that align with your strengths and the current needs of your team, you'll be well on your way to becoming the leader your organisation needs.
